About me

Welcome to my website, on this site you will find a representative selection of my work which is for sale.

Painting and drawing have always been a big part of my life; from putting those first brush marks on paper when very young, through all my school days. I went on to study a Foundation course at Ealing College of Higher Education progressing to a degree course at Stourbridge Art College in the West Midlands where I obtained a BA in Fine Art. Since leaving, I have continued to paint and draw, sometimes interspersed with other employment but never allowing my creative side to drop.

I am married with two children, both now grown up but in their own way were an inspiration to my work. Whether making drawings of them or sitting on the floor painting and making things with them, even the different places we visited, would feed my ideas. We have moved several times, living in West London, then to Wiltshire for nineteen years and now live on the outskirts of Reading. We converted an old summerhouse in the garden into a small studio space, it is a room where I can be totally absorbed in what I am doing with the sound of nature around me.

I am fascinated by water and a visit to Loch Ness when our children were young started an obsession, the sheer beauty and ever-changing skies and reflections on the Loch have led me to produce many paintings and sketches on this subject. From the still calm waters with soft skies above to the more dramatic clouds from morning to evening have inspired my work. I like the idea of timeless views in nature and the Highlands of Scotland and coastal views provide me with the opportunity to observe these scenes which remain virtually unchanged.

Sitting by any expanse of water I feel at home, whether it is the sea, a lake, a river even a garden pond or water feature, there is always something to observe. It is both the sense of freedom and space and the reflective qualities which I find so enticing. I particularly love Japanese water gardens, with their ever-changing colours, one in particular I visit in all seasons.

Sketchbooks are very important to me and I try to keep one with me wherever I go. If there is no time to draw, I use a camera as photographs can serve to jog my memory and I will then make sketches from these in order to finalise a composition for a painting. Sketchbooks allow so much freedom, from small doodles to intricate drawings or thoughts, they are a visual diary and over the years I have built up quite a collection. I will often look through them finding new inspiration as I do so. My paintings are interpretations as opposed to detailed studies of nature and I try to create a sense of place using colour to suggest mood and atmosphere. There is often a solitary feeling to many of my paintings, particularly my landscapes which I think suggest a sense of being alone with one’s own thoughts.

I spent many years teaching art in adult education and I tried to encourage students to observe the world around them and develop their own style. We looked at many artworks, from early Roman paintings, through to more contemporary styles in an attempt to keep an open mind, whilst practicing different techniques with watercolour, acrylics and drawing media to give a wide range of options when thinking about their own work. I always tried to find different ways of approaching a subject. I now concentrate solely on my own work and through life’s ups and downs art has kept me going, it drives me on and I think it always will.
